William de Worde is from the Discworld, a flat world that rests on the back of four elephants, who in turn are standing on the back of a giant tortise as it swims through space. The inhabitants of this world don't seem to find this improbable in the slightest, but on a world populated by dwarfs, trolls, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, occasionally elves, golemns and oh, yes, humans-- well, there's no reason why they should.
William himself is the youngest memory of the family de Worde, and as such he is Old Blood. More importantly, Old Money. His family is set in its ways, small-minded but clever, and extremely ruthless. William, being youngest and not set to inherit anything of importance, is generally ignored in favour of his older brother Rupert. As such, he was sent off to Hugglestones, a rather mediocre school devoted to sports and appearing just bright enough to pass in society, but he ended up atfandomhigh instead.
